Doral College celebrates 9th graduating class with fanfare, joyful celebration!

Under the bright lights of the Miami Dade County Auditorium, Doral College proudly celebrated its 9th Commencement Ceremony on Tuesday, May 17th. The college’s first in-person Commencement since 2019, this momentous occasion marked not only its largest class of Associate in Arts graduates, but also several other accomplishments, including the very first student to graduate from the college’s Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education program. His story is one of groundbreaking achievement.

The Class of 2022 was 274 strong and the first to include non-dual enrollment graduates, comprised of former dual enrollment students and partner school employees. This small group represents an important new chapter in the history of the college, which is increasingly focusing efforts on expanding options for undergraduates. In addition, the college highlighted the achievements of one particular young man, 17-year-old Nathan Nieves of SLAM Boca, who became DC’s first baccalaureate graduate in completing his high school diploma, Associate in Arts degree, and Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education degree simultaneously.

President Judy Marty described in detail the graduating class, explaining that its dual enrollment students come from 22 high schools in 7 counties across Florida, from cities as far north as Tallahassee and as far south as Key West. Nearly 76% of them graduated from Doral College with honors, of which the majority earned the distinction of Summa Cum Laude. In addition, several graduates were recognized individually, earning scholarship or academic excellence awards. Two graduates, Elizabeth Rodriguez of Colegiate Preparatory Academy and Citali Salas of Mater Lakes Academy High School were selected to address their fellow graduates, sharing thoughtful, eloquent remarks.

To everyone’s surprise, the ceremony closed with a party-style musical celebration including haze, a balloon drop, beachballs, and glowsticks. It was truly a night graduates will remember for years to come.

DC offers a special thanks to Bryan Avila, Speaker pro tempore of the Florida House of Representatives, for serving as the Keynote Speaker, and to the Mater Academy Middle/High School’s Wind Ensemble.
