Doral College celebrated its fifth commencement ceremony on Thursday, May 24th at the InterContinental at Doral Miami, with a reception for graduates and their guests taking place beforehand. The Class of 2018 is the College’s largest class yet with 67 graduates from six affiliate high schools—Doral Academy Preparatory School, Mater Academy Charter High School, Mater Lakes Academy Charter High, iMater Middle/High School, Hialeah Educational Academy, and Pinecrest Preparatory Middle/High School.
Like the classes before it, graduates of this class have already accomplished impressive things. All 67 of them will go onto continued post-secondary study, with many studying at some of the most prestigious colleges and universities in the country, including Harvard University, Carnegie Mellon University, MIT, and Stanford University. The Class of 2018 also produced impressive, well-researched Interdisciplinary Capstone Projects exploring important concepts in society, from political expression through the arts, to the importance of medical research in underexplored areas.
This impressive group includes first generation college students, AP scholars, and Gate Scholars. They have been awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarship funds from organizations including Florida Bright Futures, POSSE, Ford Salute to Education, the Miami-Dade County Youth Fair, and more.
This year, the College was honored to welcome the Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives, Richard Corcoran. During his career, Corcoran has been a staunch supporter of education and an advocate for school choice. He spoke to the graduates warmly, sharing stories of his own challenges early in college, his respect for his hard-working parents, and the lessons he has learned through his career.
Over 300 guests attended the event, including the graduates and their families, affiliate school administrators and staff, and local community partners.
