Doral College Hosts 2026 Spring Symposium to Empower Educators with Practical Strategies and Professional Insight
Doral College recently hosted its 2026 Spring Symposium, bringing together educators, school leaders, and education professionals for a day dedicated to professional growth, collaboration, and practical strategies for success in the classroom. The event, which was held on February 28th, at the AC Hotel Miami Dadeland, provided participants with valuable insights on communication, teacher certification, student motivation, and the evolving responsibilities of today’s educators.
Throughout the symposium, attendees participated in a series of professional development sessions led by experienced educators and administrators. Somerset City Arts Principal Idalia Suarez led a session focused on strengthening communication between teachers and families. In today’s fast-paced and technology-driven world, building strong partnerships with parents is both essential and, at times, challenging. Participants explored strategies for communicating clearly, respectfully, and confidently—even in difficult situations. Through real-life scenarios and practical exercises, educators discussed how to manage challenging conversations, remain calm when emotions run high, and transform moments of tension into opportunities for collaboration and connection with families.
Another session, presented by Arlene Diaz, Director of Certification for the Doral Leadership Institute, highlighted the importance of understanding the teacher certification process and maintaining professional and ethical responsibilities as an educator. The presentation guided participants through the steps required to upgrade a Florida Temporary Teaching Certificate to a Professional Teaching Certificate, including understanding the Statement of Eligibility (SOE), required coursework, certification exams, teaching experience criteria, and key timelines. The session also emphasized the importance of professional conduct, supporting student well-being, adhering to district and state policies, and upholding ethical standards both inside and outside the classroom.
Participants also explored ways to motivate students through research-based practices during a hands-on workshop led by Liliana Salazar, National Director of Special Education for Academica, and Bonnie May, Regional Director for Academica. The session examined key findings from the Science of Learning and how these insights can be applied in the classroom to encourage motivation, persistence, and engagement. Educators left with practical strategies designed to foster a learning mindset in their students and inspire greater effort and confidence in the learning process.
The symposium concluded with an engaging educator panel moderated by Ileana Melian, Assistant Dean of the School of Education at Doral College. The panel brought together administrators, instructors, and Doral College alumni currently working in schools to share their experiences and perspectives on the profession. Panelists included Dr. Yesenia Ruiz, advisor and instructor at Doral College; Samantha McNabb, instructor at Doral College; Graciela Carbajosa, principal of COHEA Career & Collegiate Academy; Zuleika Santos Gonzalez, vice principal of Pinecrest Glades Academy and instructor at Doral College; Betty Morris, principal of Mater Preparatory Academy; Joel Mesa, principal of Somerset College Preparatory Academy South; Angelica Torres, a first-grade teacher at Somerset Academy South Homestead and Doral College alumna; and Isabella Sotelo, a second-grade teacher at Doral Academy Elementary School and Doral College alumna.
The panel discussion offered attendees valuable perspectives from professionals across different roles in education, highlighting the importance of mentorship, continued professional development, and collaboration throughout an educator’s career.
“Events like the Spring Symposium create valuable opportunities for educators to learn from one another and reflect on their practice,” said Cristina Guerra Romero, Vice President for Enrollment Management & Development at Doral College. “When teachers, school leaders, and alumni come together to share their experiences, it strengthens the professional community that supports our schools and helps educators return to their classrooms with new ideas and renewed purpose.”
Building on the success of previous years, the 2026 Spring Symposium continued Doral College’s commitment to providing meaningful professional development opportunities for educators across the community, especially beginning teachers. The event highlighted the college’s ongoing role in supporting teachers throughout their careers and fostering collaboration among education professionals.
